Osteopathic Medical Education

Since 1993, in collaboration with the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, Biddeford, Maine, positions fulfilling the requirements for American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Rotating Internships have been offered at Berkshire Medical Center.  In 1996 Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) began offering an AOA Internal Medicine Residency program allowing Osteopathic physicians to be dually eligible for board certification by both the Osteopathic (AOBIM) and Allopathic (ABIM) Internal Medicine Boards.

The program is integrated at all levels with the Berkshire Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine. The first year of training in this program differs from the traditional AOA internship and follows the new AOA internship structure allowing direct entrance into residency training.

Beginning in 2002, Berkshire Medical Center furthered its relationship with the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and began hosting eight 3rd year osteopathic medical students in their core rotations, including Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery and Psychiatry. Numerous 4th year electives and sub-internship rotations are also available to osteopathic medical students.

Berkshire Medical Center has a firm commitment to providing a complete osteopathic medical education for all osteopathic trainees who participate in our teaching programs. We have developed a thriving OMM continuity clinic for our students, interns and residents to see and treat their own patients under the supervision of a Neuromucsculoskeletal/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine board certified precepting physician. We also have an active OMM hospital consultation service and a monthly lecture/lab curriculum.

A Neuromusculoskelal/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM) Plus-one Residency program to follow the AOA Internal Medicine Residency is currently in development. BMC has a diverse medical staff representing all medical specialties. Our medical staff includes over 20 board certified Osteopathic physicians representing a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including Primary Care Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, NMM/OMM, Hospitalist Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Neurology, Interventional Radiology, Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Oncologic Surgery and Pathology.

Pittsfield is located in the scenic Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, a major tourist and cultural destination, and is easily accessible to major metropolitan areas in the Northeast.
